CultRepo
CultRepo makes long-form documentaries about open-source software. It began as Honeypot's documentary channel and needed its own brand when it went independent. The client chose the name and asked for a ghost that could wear accessories. I designed the rest: the logo, Gastly the mascot, the logo animation, the thumbnails that announced the rename, and the website, which I also built. I also made the key art for the Clojure and C++ films.

Finding the ghost
The brief asked for a ghost that could wear accessories. The pencil sketches tried it with sunglasses, a halo and headphones, and in other shapes too: one like the old Honeypot bear, one stuck inside a TV set, one folded into a play button.

02
First logo drafts
I tried the ghost in the wordmark a few ways: on a play button, inside a TV, cut down to two eyes. The TV version stayed.

03
The logo
The final symbol is the ghost in a screen. The wordmark is condensed capitals with a green full stop. I delivered four versions for different spaces: horizontal, stacked, symbol plus wordmark, and the symbol alone.

04
Small sizes and motion
The symbol has five levels of detail. The smallest is only the eyes, so it still reads as a favicon or a profile picture. I also animated the logo: the TV switches on, the ghost looks out, and the name scrolls across the screen.

05
Gastly
The finished ghost, with the accessories the brief asked for: a film camera, a laptop, headphones, a skateboard and a glass of wine. The channel reuses the poses in thumbnails and posts.

06
Goodbye, Honeypot
The rename had to be explained to an audience that knew the channel as Honeypot. The first thumbnails show the Honeypot bear saying goodbye. The next ones introduce CultRepo with one line: independently owned and developers focused.

07
Clojure: The Pragmatic Lisp
I sketched the poster in pencil first: an explorer at a temple door. Then came the lettering and the release kit: thumbnails for the film and the trailer, a YouTube banner, posts for Instagram and X, and a LinkedIn banner.

08
C++: The Language Behind Everything
One poster for the people behind C++, printed at A3 to hand out at events and screening parties, and adapted for social media. The same art made the thumbnails for the film and the trailer.
