.Cult by Honeypot

.Cult was the content side of Honeypot: the magazine, the reports, and a run of documentaries about the people behind the tools developers use every day. I was its art director and editorial designer. Two parts of that work are here: the documentaries and the reports.

Part 01

The documentaries

While .Cult was still part of Honeypot, it made films about the people behind the tools developers use every day. I worked on three: React, Node.js and Ruby on Rails. The filmmakers later went independent as Tech Documentaries.

React

React.js: The Documentary

An origin story of React, and how rethinking best practices changed an industry. I made the key art. It started as thumbnail sketches, then a line drawing of the cast, then paint, light and the React atom behind them. The animation shows the poster being built, step by step.

The launch

The film premiered with screenings in Barcelona, Vienna, Berlin and Amsterdam, and at React Day. Each stop got its own poster, with the venue and a QR code for tickets.

On YouTube

Thumbnails for the film and its release, a square version of the poster for social, and a logo intro: the React atom drawing itself.

I also made the key art for Node.js, which premiered at JSWorld Conference, with its social set, and for Ruby on Rails.

Part 02

Honeypot Reports

Honeypot published reports to learn about its audience, and made them useful enough that developers handed over their details to read them. I led the design on three, for print and screen, each in English and German, and made a landing page for each one: that page is where readers left their details to get the report, so it collected the leads.

2024

Tech Career Guide

A guide to tech bootcamps and their courses, handed out through every unemployment agency in Germany, in print and online, in English and German. It was a collaboration between Honeypot and StartSteps, made by both teams together with an external designer, @vitorelo.art.

Salary Report

Tech salaries by country: trends, pay gaps and the most in-demand roles, built on Honeypot's own platform data with the content team. Designed for screen and print, and handed out at industry events.

Developer Ambitions Report

What more than 1,000 developers across Europe wanted from their careers: skills, goals, and the community they were looking for. I led its design and build, with the content team.

The campaign dressed the report up as spam, but branded as Honeypot: retro pop-up windows, a warning dialog, and a "Download now our Developer Ambitions REPORT!!!1!!1!!" pointing to the landing page.
